Both BBC Persian and Radio Farda (Radio Free Europe) are reporting that the Iranian “blogfather’s” latest appeal of his 19.5 imprisonment sentence has been denied. As I have blogged previously, Derakhshan was charged and convicted of: “conspiring with hostile governments, disseminating anti-Islamic propaganda, disseminating anti-revolutionary propaganda, blasphemy, and operating and managing obscene pornography websites.”
He was ordered to serve 19.5 years in prison, is banned for five years from joining any Iranian political party and is required to pay €30,750, $2,900 and 200 British pounds. He was temporarily released from prison on two occasions, once in December 2010 and another time more recently, in May 2011.
At that time he posted publicly on his Facebook page: “On a very short leave from Evin.”
